Creative Space DNA
Through our creative space network, Creative Space DNA, Mass Cultural Council is partnering with the ArtStaysHere Coalition to initiate a development network accelerator to help those preserving, developing, and advocating for a healthier creative space ecosystem across Massachusetts.
Creative Space DNA’s monthly Zoom sessions will bring together artists, musicians, cultural organizations, funders, developers, and anyone advocating for creative space in their community.
Each session highlights the work of experienced professionals as well as the lived experience of artists.
Creative Zoning & Municipal Tools – Arts Overlay Districts
June 26, 2026
This session focused on the municipal land-use and “creative zoning” tools used to protect and expand local arts spaces. Featuring experts from Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and the City of Somerville, the discussion traced Somerville’s multi-decade zoning trajectory, highlighting its fabrication districts and a 5% arts space set-aside that was recently refined in 2025.
The session emphasized that while zoning changes provide critical negotiating leverage, zoning cannot preserve creative space on its own. It must be layered with community advocacy, strict definitions, and broader legislative mechanisms.
Working with Architects

This session focused on how to work effectively with architects and design consultants. Presenters from Architects Resources of Cambridge (ARC), Boston Society of Architecture (BSA), and Acentech emphasized that architectural work is a powerful pre-design tool for clarifying space feasibility, embedding organizational values like dignity and respect into physical layouts, and planning for early acoustic compatibility in shared facilities.
The session included practical guidance on navigating a persistent structural funding gap, highlighting that non-profit co-location frameworks and developer partnerships are increasingly vital to absorbing high construction costs without sacrificing community access.
Adaptive Reuse of Municipal Buildings

This session explored the adaptive reuse of surplus municipal buildings into artist work spaces and cultural centers. The session outlined four primary case studies—ranging from nonprofit ownership models to city-operated facilities—and detailed how practitioners navigated financing puzzles, multi-year construction phasing, and complex insurance requirements.
Ultimately, long-term project viability relies on cultivating persistent municipal champions, shaping creative local RFP language, and establishing operational models well before the doors open.

Organizing & Advocacy
March 27, 2026
The inaugural DNA session featured ArtStaysHere Coalition’s grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and developer negotiations preserving at-risk artist workspaces across Massachusetts. Insights were shared from the Charlestown Rehearsal Studios Tenants Association and Humphrey Street Studios campaigns.
A big take away was that proactive tenant organization and quantifying economic impact are crucial for securing community and municipal support.
