Jen Lawless, Deputy Director, Mass Cultural Council

Jen Lawless is the Deputy Director of Mass Cultural Council, the Commonwealth’s independent state arts agency. She is a longtime member of the agency’s leadership team, with extensive experience in public-sector arts funding, grantmaking, program development, and organizational operations.

Jen has held a succession of roles since joining the agency as a Program Officer in 2006. She subsequently served as a Program Manager and Operations Director before becoming Senior Director of Program Operations. During her tenure, she has helped administer and shape a wide range of the agency’s investments in artists, cultural organizations, communities, arts education, youth development, and cultural heritage.

As Senior Director of Program Operations, Jen provided leadership for the agency’s programs and worked across departments to strengthen the agency’s data and grantmaking systems and improve access to public funding. She has been a key contributor to the agency’s strategic planning, grantmaking design, and ongoing work to advance equity and broaden participation in its programs.

Jen is recognized for her deep institutional knowledge, thoughtful approach to public sector administration, and commitment to effective, equitable, and accessible public investment in the cultural sector. As Deputy Director, she works closely with the Executive Director, governing Council, and senior leadership team to advance Mass Cultural Council’s mission and support the Agency’s staff, programs, and statewide partnerships.

Jen holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. Prior to working at the agency, she worked in education and community arts.
