Our cultural organizations do such important work – they connect people to theater, music, visual art, and film; they teach us about history, literature, and the environment; they drive innovation and economic development, serving as anchors within communities; they introduce us to new ideas and cultural traditions and so much more.

Mass Cultural Council is proud to financially and programmatically support nonprofit organizations through the Cultural Investment Portfolio. Since 2010, this grant program has provided unrestricted operating support to hundreds of arts and culture organizations across the state. In FY24, we are awarding $6,988,800 to 338 organizations, recognizing their importance in the Commonwealth’s cultural ecosystem and ensuring that they continue to thrive.

This past year, Mass Cultural Council has begun to implement our new three-year strategic plan, which sets forth how we, as a state agency, can advance the creative and cultural sector as an ever-important asset to the Commonwealth’s economy, health, and vitality. As part of this effort, we have been examining our programs through the lens of furthering equity and maximizing impact.

To that end, we are moving into a new chapter of financial support for cultural organizations. Later this spring, we will launch Operating Grants for Organizations which will provide unrestricted operating grants to nonprofit cultural organizations. This spring our staff will offer virtual and in-person office hours to meet with potential applicants and answer questions.

We know that arts and culture is a $27.2 billion industry here in Massachusetts, supporting more than 135,000 jobs. Our vibrant nonprofit cultural organizations are key contributors to this economic impact. Our Operating Grants for Organizations will make public investments to help cultural organizations continue to grow and succeed. We are excited to share this new program and vision with you. Stay up-to-date on these developments by following the Agency on social media (@masscultural) or signing up to receive our Power of Culture enewsletter.
