Wellfleet Cultural Council

The Wellfleet Cultural Council (WCC) is a town committee of volunteers appointed by the Wellfleet Board of Selectmen. WCC receives state funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and local funds from the Town of Wellfleet plus our own fundraising efforts. We distribute this money through annual grants for a broad variety of projects in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences. This council accepts grant proposals in online formats.

FY27 Allocation

$5,700

FY27 Local Priorities

The Wellfleet Cultural Council seeks to support arts, humanities, and science projects and events that:

• Encourage year-round programming and strengthen Wellfleet’s cultural vitality, particularly during the shoulder and off-season months.

• Celebrate, interpret, or preserve Wellfleet’s artistic, cultural, maritime, historical, and environmental heritage.

• Advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and cross-cultural understanding by engaging a broad range of participants, audiences, and perspectives.

• Provide educational opportunities for all ages.

• Provide free or low-cost opportunities for public participation and cultural engagement.

• Encourage innovative and collaborative projects that create new artistic, cultural, educational, or community experiences, particularly those that support emerging artists, new initiatives, and expanded public access to arts, humanities, and science programming.

• Support a balanced and diverse portfolio of cultural activities and audiences, including visual arts, music, theater, dance, literature, history, science, folk and traditional arts, and multidisciplinary programs.

• Prioritize projects that take place in and directly benefit the Wellfleet community. Preference will be given to Wellfleet-based artists and organizations. Projects proposed by artists and organizations located elsewhere on the Outer Cape may also receive priority consideration when they demonstrate a clear and direct benefit to the Wellfleet community.

FY27 Local Guidelines

• Projects must provide a clear and meaningful public benefit to the Wellfleet community. Applicants should identify the intended audience or participants and describe the project’s anticipated community impact.

• Any required venue must be secured and identified at the time of application. Documentation of venue approval, such as a letter of agreement or rental contract, is required.

• Applicants should make every reasonable effort to select accessible venues. If the venue is not accessible, describe how the project will ensure equitable access for people with disabilities, including any planned accommodations.

• Projects must take place and be completed during calendar year 2027.

• Only one application per individual, organization, or project team will be considered. Applicants seeking support for multiple activities should combine requests into a single, larger application.

• Applications must include a realistic, project-specific budget that reflects the estimated actual costs of producing the proposed project. Organizational operating budgets may be submitted as supplemental information, but do not replace a project-specific budget.

• If the amount requested from the Wellfleet Cultural Council will not fully fund the project, applicants should identify other confirmed or anticipated sources of revenue and demonstrate a reasonable plan for covering the project’s total cost.

• In making funding decisions, the Council may consider the overall distribution of grants among applicants, organizations, and affiliated projects in order to maximize community benefit, support a diversity of cultural activities, and ensure broad access to available funding.
