1. Regarding my personal artwork: I utilize found wood as a conduit for an exploration of the energy found within. The grain serves as my guide on a journey into the lines, shapes, and flow of the composition of the wood. In transforming the pieces of scrap wood (that others thought as nothing more than trash) into works of art highlighting each piece’s natural greatness, I hope to share the idea that everything has an inherent beauty that will shine through when the time is taken to look at it from a new perspective.
2. Regarding my community mural work: Combining ideas of art therapy and community art, I have facilitated many community murals around the greater Boston area and beyond. The intention is to empower communities in the creation of art that is meaningful to them by working with the community members throughout the entire mural process, from design to completed painting. Most participants have been people who have never painted a mural before and who don’t consider themselves artists. But when given the opportunity, all have surpassed what they thought they could do and have worked together to create lasting murals to enjoy while building self esteem, learning about teamwork, and uncovering hidden talents. The inner beauty of each community mural lay in the power of the process.
