Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “If I had 20 days to solve a problem, I would spend 19 days to define it.” For me, every piece starts with a hypothesis about the nature of a relationship between 2 or more things, and ends after all the relevant data has been compiled and edited into something that fits into a rectangle.
Even at my most playful, I am beholden to the laws of an internal physics that guides my decisions in medium and method; I am most satisfied when an artwork fits soundly within that framework. Fascinated by the use of pattern as an indicator of analogy, I rely heavily on pattern to provide the viewer a means of access in establishing their own connections between the elements of a piece.
For the past ten years, my work has been primarily based in photography where small decisions can quickly have an impact on the outcome of a piece–a different angle, a different light and the subject is refreshed–but also where there is so much potential for reinterpretation after capture. I find to photography be the most natural tool in exploring themes common in my artwork such as consumerism, modern American culture, and identity.
