For the past five years I have been working on a project, “Panhandlers of Harvard Square,” a series of oil portraits, painted from life, of the homeless folks who scratch out a living in Harvard Square. I started this project in 2010, at the height of the Great Recession, The panhandlers seemed particularly numerous, particularly young and needy. I pay my subjects $10 to let me paint them as they beg and if they want to talk about themselves, I write that down too.
