John Guthrie

John Guthrie is a Boston-based visual artist, curator, educator, and the founder/director of Gallery VERY, a community-based, community-oriented art space that has supported artists from emerging voices to long-established practitioners across New England since 2016. His studio practice spans painting, ceramics, and public-oriented sculpture, with a focus on abstraction, symbolic form, and the creation of spaces for reflection and presence.

As both an artist and cultural organizer, Guthrie is deeply invested in the creative ecosystem of New England. Through Gallery VERY, he has organized over 30 exhibitions, hosted talks, and built intergenerational networks of artists. The gallery consistently spotlights diverse perspectives—particularly those historically underrepresented or overlooked in traditional art spaces. His projects emphasize collaboration, community visibility, and accessible entry points into contemporary art regardless of age, background, or experience.

Guthrie’s recent work in ceramic sculpture explores embodiment, multiplicity, and non-fixed identity, informed by principles of queer abstraction and the ritual function of symbolic objects. He is currently developing public-facing sculptural projects that engage Boston communities through participatory processes, spatial justice considerations, and thoughtful partnerships.

He welcomes opportunities for collaboration, community engagement, mentorship, and creative exchange throughout New England.
