Janeann Dill

“Philosophically, I am an interdisciplinary artist interested in experimental thinking as the fine art of all disciplines. Especially, my thinking focuses on the in-between spaces that traverse disciplinary boundaries. This point of view pervades not only my personal art making but also my authorial work as a writer and faculty who encourages innovative research, praxis, and critical thinking in the fields of experimental animation, experimental film, drawing, painting, visual music and histories rooted in art history.”

Janeann Dill’s art has been exhibited and collected throughout Europe, South Africa, the Middle East and the USA; her published writings have been translated into Spanish, Korean, and Arabic; and her films have screened widely in numerous international film festivals, on public television, and in theatrical and museum environments world-wide. Dill is working towards the completion of an historically pertinent non-fiction feature film and critical biography that positions Jules Engel (1909-2003) and the impact of experimental animation as a mode of art within the time line of art history.

Dr. Dill is faculty for an advanced Critical Writing and Research Seminar, “Animation Histories: Jules Engel (1909-2003) and Experimental Animation” in the Visual and Media Arts Department of  the School of Arts at Emerson College (Boston). The seminar she designed has had various iterations under the rubric of Animation Histories )in the plural), such as “From Concept To Screen” and “From the Pre-Cinematic Toy to the Experimental Arts in Contemporary Animation.” Dill has served as Visiting Faculty at Lesley University’s College of Art and Design, Animation and Motion Media Department (Cambridge); Visiting Artist at The Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, Film and Animation Department (Boston); and Visiting Critic at Mass Art, Animation Department (Boston).
