David Fichter is a visual artist who has created community murals and mosaics around the country for over 30 years in schools, libraries, health centers, universities, and other public spaces. The murals are colorful, figurative, and lively, often exploring themes of local history, multiculturalism, and natural environments. He is also a teaching artist who has worked in over 200 public and private schools as an artist in resident. During these residencies, students of all ages have learned to design and paint permanent murals that relate to their school culture, history or curriculum. In many cases, the entire school community participates in creating the mural. A highly visible example of the work with students is the Mystic River Mural Project in Somerville, MA, which was begun in 1996. The Healey School mosaic was created with students from the 3rd through 8th grades during an artist residency. It is made from glass tile that the students cut and placed on the mosaic design template. It was then installed on the outside of the school.A mural designed and painted with high school students on panels, which were installed on the outside of the Alewife T Station in Cambridge MA. Students from grades four through eight designed and fabricated the medallions which are installed on the front of the school.
