David Degner is a Boston photographer working in documentary photography, portraiture and visual experimentation. Based in Somerville, he works throughout Greater Boston and New England, bringing a photojournalist’s attention to people, place and everyday life.
After studying photojournalism and philosophy, David moved to Cairo just before the Arab Spring in 2011. He spent the next nine years covering news, religion, human rights and cultural life in Egypt and across the region. That experience continues to shape his long-term personal projects:
Modern Miracles explores faith and everyday life in Egypt, following stories of miraculous events and places over about six years.
Fancy Pigeon Portraits celebrates Cairo’s remarkable pigeon breeds and the culture of care and knowledge surrounding them.
Show of Force uses infrared photography to examine military presence in American cities, including downtown Boston.
A Bird’s-Eye View experiments with small cameras carried by pigeons, exploring unfamiliar perspectives with the help of pigeon fanciers.
His photographs have appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, Rolling Stone and other publications. Alongside personal projects, David creates editorial portraits, industrial photography and commercial image libraries for publications, businesses and cultural organizations. Assignments are available on location or by appointment at his Davis Square studio.
