Hingham Cultural Council

The Hingham Cultural Council (HCC) is a group of volunteers appointed by the Select Board. Our primary purpose is to ensure that our town’s share of funds from the Mass Cultural Council are administered fairly and equitably in the best interests of the Hingham community. Our mission is to support cultural events – in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences – for the benefit of Hingham’s citizens, by raising awareness and encouraging individuals, groups, and organizations to apply for Local Cultural Council grants. The Council encourages fresh, stimulating, and culturally enriching experiences that add to our resident’s quality of life using these limited funds.

FY26 Allocation

FY26 Local Priorities

The Council’s priorities are to fund grants for arts and cultural events held within Hingham and neighboring towns – or by Hingham residents, or groups that showcase them – to benefit a broad range of interests. Councilors value well-prepared and thorough applications, and we encourage first-time applicants.

FY26 Local Guidelines

• All grant applications must benefit the community, and promote the arts, humanities, or interpretive sciences.
• All grant applicants must have a local sponsor, expected date(s), and a venue. We strongly recommend that applicants contact prospective venues before submitting an application.
• All grant applications are accepted ON-LINE ONLY from SEPTEMBER 2nd – OCTOBER 16th 2025 in the SmartSimple Grants Management System (GMS).
• All reimbursement paperwork for all grants awarded by the HCC must also be submitted ON-LINE ONLY to hinghamculturalcouncil@gmail.com; hard copies are NOT accepted. Please use this Gmail address for any and all grant-related correspondence.

Councilors review each application, then we meet publicly in November to discuss the merits of each request and vote on distribution of available funds. Immediately after this Voting Meeting, the GMS automatically generates brief Denial-notices. After the 15-day reconsideration period, we send brief Approval-notices from the GMS. By mid-December, each Grant recipient receives a detailed “Approval Letter” email from the Council’s Gmail account (see above).

As with any financial contract, Grantees should read their Approval Letter thoroughly. It will clearly state the grant amount, any stipulations as to how the funds may be used, how to manage any changes or extensions, and the deadline for reimbursement.

Councilors appreciate notice of sponsored events, so we can update our calendars and perhaps attend. For timely reimbursement, please include:
1. the latest Reimbursement Form PDF (from https://massculturalcouncil.org/documents/lccreim.pdf or as attached to the Approval Letter email);
2. copy of relevant invoices / receipts / paid bills, etc.;
3. a sample of the event program – or social media, flyers, web page, ads, etc. – acknowledging HCC’s support. For example: “This event is supported by a grant from the Hingham Cultural Council, a local agency funded by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.”
(https://massculturalcouncil.org/about/contracts/lcc-credit-and-publicity-kit/);
4. a W-9 form; Town Accounting needs a W-9 on-file to verify the Taxpayer ID of any payee of town funds. (https://www.macomptroller.org/wp-content/uploads/form_w-9.pdf)
5. NOTE: Reimbursement requests submitted after the specified deadline risk being denied.
