Kai Bee Studios is the creative practice of Kai Barrows (they/them), a QTBIPOC illustrator and comic artist based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Working across multitudes of media, Kai creates narrative-based artwork that centers identity and diverse representation. Their interdisciplinary creative practice often takes the form of zines, character design, illustration prints, comics, animations, and more.
Emerging from a passion for storytelling and fantasy, Kai’s work explores themes of gender, belonging, self-expression, and community, with a focus on uplifting queer and trans people, people of color, and underrepresented voices. Drawing inspiration primarily from folklore, the natural world, and lived experience, Kai reimagines familiar fantasy tropes by placing queer characters and marginalized identities at the heart of fantastical narratives. Through subverting traditional archetypes and challenging stereotypes, their work creates space for more expansive representations of identity and relationships while maintaining a sense of wonder and otherworldliness.
Beyond their studio practice, Kai is passionate about making art more accessible through community arts programming, creative workshops, mentorship, and arts education. Drawing on experience in youth programming and trauma-informed training, they encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to explore their creativity, build resilience, tell their own stories, and connect through art.
Kai’s ultimate goal is to create spaces for connection, and nurture a world where more people can see themselves reflected in the art and stories around them.
