Lisa Boemer

Artist / Creative (Individual)

Lisa Boemer (b. 1963, Wisconsin) is a contemporary visual artist based in Waltham, Massachusetts. Her practice encompasses painting, drawing, mixed media, and installation, with a focus on line, movement, connection, and the ways materials influence how we see and experience the world.

Working with oil, cold wax, acrylic, ink, handmade paper, string, and reclaimed materials, Boemer approaches artmaking through observation, curiosity, and experimentation. Her process involves layering, scraping, pulling, twisting, knotting, and suspending materials, allowing unexpected marks, textures, and forms to emerge. Her work moves between representation and abstraction, often drawing upon observations of the natural world, memory, and the physical qualities of materials.

Her recent work extends drawing beyond the traditional surface through Spatial Drawings, three-dimensional compositions incorporating hand-twisted paper rope, string, and found materials. These works engage gravity, light, air, and shadow, inviting viewers to consider how a line changes when it moves into space. Across her practice, Boemer encourages viewers to slow down, look closely, and discover something unexpected.

Boemer’s work has been included in juried exhibitions at the Fitchburg Art Museum, Copley Society of Art in Boston, and WAH Center in Brooklyn, New York. Her painting ACHELOIS received Second Place in the Abstract category of the 2025 BoldBrush Painting Competition.

Her artist residencies include MADE in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (2026); the Horned Dorset Colony in New York (2025); the New York Academy of Art Summer Residency (2025), where she received a partial merit scholarship; and the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill (2025). She has received support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, LynnSpire, and the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Alongside her studio practice, Boemer works as a teaching artist, developing community-based workshops and collaborative projects that encourage observation, creative exploration, and connection. Her work is held in private collections.
