eyeMusic Projects

“eyeMusic is my compilation of experiments utilizing musical elements and aesthetics, such as notation, texture, and listening experiences as means to derive visual works. Even in my musical works, I have always experimented with the visuals of the score while still remaining bound to the semiotic understanding that certain symbols provoke defined actions in performance. eyeMusic projects free those symbols of predefined direction, allowing for a more fluid and gestural relationship amongst the same symbols in different structures.”

Kevin Baldwin, composer/artist

Kevin Baldwin (Natick, MA) is a creator utilizing music and sound as primary material, leading to the creation of “eyeMusic”. As a classically trained saxophonist and composer, Kevin started experimenting with the visuals of music notation after twisting the musical idea of the “score” on its head. He defined the “score” as anything that informs a musician’s creation of sound and began using sounds as the “score” to create visual works in ink and acrylics. Kevin was further inspired by the classical music tradition of “graphic scores” by composers such as Earle Brown and Cornelius Cardew. While not all of Kevin’s visual works are directly tied to sound or music, Kevin’s continued study and international career as a saxophonist and composer shapes his larger artistic philosophies.In recent years, Kevin has received awards and commissions including a festival participant at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, GE as a composer, which culminated in the premiere of a new work for Ensemble SurPlus. Other important commissions include body and… and… for bass flute and an untitled work for piano; both will appear on upcoming albums. Kevin received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Composition from the University of Washington in 2018 and since moved to the greater Boston area. Kevin has recently held positions as lecturer at the University of Washington and Northeastern University.
