My work documents specific moments to which I had uncontrollable responses. These responses propelled me to do this ongoing project titled ‘Ecchymosis’. It includes three sub projects: ‘Fluids’, ‘Solids’, and ‘Solutions’.
‘Fluids’ captures the emotional aspects of a given time and memory. It depicts the experience with emotions and how they move and adapt themselves to their surroundings. The work is very gestural and expressive, done entirely in oil on canvas with a palette knife. Its application ranges widely in order to enhance the movement, changes, and fluidity in time.
The second, ‘Solids,’ is a more physical depiction of a setting, which the ‘Fluids’ could inhabit. This series involves geometric abstractions focusing on layering, color relationships, and depth within this type of architecture. The paintings are flat and multi-planar, done with acrylic on canvas.
The dichotomy of these two theses brings the third to life as there are strengths and weaknesses in both. When they come together, they enhance one another to build a stronger façade. Stylistically they are juxtaposing, but naturally combine to form a solution. Painted entirely in black and blue, this series shows the marriage of ‘Fluids’ and ‘Solids’ and accentuates manipulations of their “solutions”.
When architecture is manipulated, its foundation becomes vulnerable, increasing the possibility of a rupture. New ruptures accentuate pre-existing cracks that have always existed. Together they highlight that manipulation, showing depressions or contusions in their structures, permanently changing the solution. Where do fluids go when there’s nothing solid to hold them?
When societal pressures impact a situation in which a person’s emotional response is altered, it could be detrimental to its foundation. Whether that structure is as big as a friendship or as small as a walk to get coffee, it requires a restructuring of its architecture. These moments are what I refer to as “bruises”.
By exploring the paths of emotions, I incorporate their tendencies with physical structures to achieve something visceral yet surreal.
