Today the state Legislature approved a final budget for the new fiscal year that boosts funding for the arts, humanities, and sciences through Mass Cultural Council by $2 million.
CultureRx is a new Mass Cultural Council initiative that advances the role of culture as a protective factor for the health of everyone in the Commonwealth.
Governor Charlie Baker released a state budget proposal today that would invest $16.1 million in the arts, humanities, and sciences through Mass Cultural Council for the coming fiscal year. The Governor’s proposal would maintain current cultural funding levels for Fiscal Year 2020, which begins July 1.
The governing board of the Mass Cultural Council has approved the Fall River Waterfront Cultural District. This state designation will help stimulate new arts and cultural activity and attract creative businesses for the City.
A powerful argument for robust public investment in arts and culture has been made this week, albeit unintentionally, with a recent high-profile suggestion that cultural sites in the Middle East could be in potential danger.
The nation’s leading scholars and advocates for folk and traditional arts have awarded Dr. Maggie Holtzberg of Newton their highest national honor for lifetime achievement in public folklore. Dr. Holtzberg was awarded the Benjamin A. Botkin Prize by the American Folklore Society (AFS) at its annual meeting last month in Buffalo, NY.
Last month, the National Endowment for the Arts honored their 2019 National Heritage Fellows, including traditional artist Balla Kouyaté of Medford, MA.
As part of our Universal Participation (UP) Initiative, Mass Cultural Council invites cultural organizations that demonstrate inclusive practices to apply for an UP Designation.
